Strange cell phone glitch?

I’ve never been one to take much stock in paranormal stuff, but I have to admit this freaked me out a little bit. I was driving over to a friend’s house when I got a call from a number that wasn’t in my phone. No big deal, but I choose to let strange numbers go to voicemail, just a personal choice. So less than a minute later, I see that I have a voicemail. It’s the same woman’s voice introducing my message: “You have one unheard message, First unheard message.”

Then all I heard was this weird static. Wasn’t really static, but I don’t know what else to call it. Sort of this warbly, underwater-yet-somehow-electronic sound. And that didn’t freak me out either, figured whoever called me had bad reception or something. But all of a sudden it stopped, then it sounded like someone blew really hard into the speaker. We all know what that sounds like. Then, I just heard breathing, heavy breathing for about 15 seconds, then back to the static. And I kept listening to it go like that, static, breathing, static, breathing, sometimes long and sometimes short, it didn’t really make a pattern. After a while, I looked at the screen, and I’d been listening to this message for about 5 minutes, it never cut off. I wouldn’t have been so freaked out if it was just static, but the breathing was definitely weird.

So finally I hung up. I decided to call back the number. Turns out, it was just my friend, who had gotten a new phone number. She wanted me to pick up cigarettes on the way over. I figured someone had been messing with me, so I went back to my voicemail, deleted all of my old messages, and when it got to that last freaky one… it was just a regular message. My friend asking me to grab cigarettes one the way over.

What could make that happen? Anyone know?
